Student Learning Expectations

  1. Demonstrate instrumental technique (e.g., fingerings, playing position, tone quality, articulation)

  2. Demonstrate instrument maintenance and care

  3. Read and perform music notation at a ―beginning‖ to 2 grade-level 

  4. Read and perform a short song/piece using effective expression and characteristic timbre

  5. Perform a varied repertoire of music representing diverse cultures, genres and styles

  6. Apply stylistic elements needed to perform the music of various cultures, genres and styles

  7. Demonstrate characteristic timbre, tempo, and dynamics independently for group performance, responding expressively to the cues of the conductor

  8. Improvise simple rhythmic variations in a consistent style and meter

  9. Perform standard rhythmic notation in 2/4, ¾, 4/4 and 6/8 meter signature with bar lines using all rhythm and note values 

  10. Employ standard pitch notation in the clef appropriate to student’s instrument in an appropriate range and *keys

  11. Sight read standard musical notation at level 2 difficulty [Level 2 –Easy; may include changes of tempo, *key, and meter; modest ranges]

  12. Identify forms used in selected ensemble repertoire

  13. Develop criteria to distinguish between quality and non-quality performance through listening and self-assessment with regard to the following musical elements:

    • tone quality

    • expression/phrasing

    • rhythmic accuracy

    • pitch accuracy

    • part acquisition

    • blend/balance

    • articulation

    • style

    • posture/stage

    • presence


 

Materials Needed:

Instrument – student owned or school owned (see School Owned Agreement)

Band Book – Essential Elements Book 1 (Student my use a school provided copy to remain at the school)

Music – a copy is provided by the School District, to be returned by the end of the performance

 

***Clarinets & Saxophones – Reeds  - 1st reed at no charge, any additional reeds will cost $2.00.


 

Grading:

  • Daily Participation Points:

    • Student will receive 5 points per day for classroom rehearsals. If a student is prepared for class, on time, participates, and follows classroom rules and school policy, the student will receive all 5 points. Failure to be prepared, tardiness, and inappropriate behavior will result in loss of Daily Participation Points. 

  • Performances*: 

    • It is important for every member to attend performances. Unlike a written assignment or test, performances cannot be made up or reproduced. Additionally, the band is a group activity where students must rehearse and perform in a collaborative fashion. 

  • Practice Cards: 

    • Students should practice what they are learning, at home.

  • Playing Tests, Worksheets and Quizzes: 

    • These will be performance-based or written and will take place during the class period. Students will be given prior notice to prepare before any test or quiz.


 

Participation - 25 pts. per week

Practice Cards - 25 pts per week (to begin second quarter)

Playing Test  - 1 test per quarter; 25 pts

*Any Concert Performance will count as a Playing Test grade.  If the performance is missed, the student will be responsible for asking for a make-up assignment to replace the 25 pts. Missed.  If the student fails to make-up the assignment the grade will be recorded as a Zero.

To Begin Class

  1. Enter the room in a calm, dignified manner. Take your seat and be ready to begin. 

  2. Store computers on shelf or with instrument cases.

  3. Check in with the lunch count.

  4. Agenda for the day will be on the smartboard.

  5. Take out your instrument and, then put away the case. Cases can not be kept in the seating area.

  6. Music Folders should be stored with the instrument case or in the Folder Storage unit.

During Class

  1. Participate appropriately in all classroom activities.

  2. Return all supplies, books, instruments or chairs, to their correct place.

  3. Pick up after yourself.  

  4. The Teacher's desk and computer is off limits.

  5. Instruments, including the piano and drum set, are off limits except for those assigned to that instrument. 

  6. You must have a pass to visit the nurse. 

  7. To be recognized by teacher and/or to address the class, raise your hand and wait for acknowledgment from teacher before speaking.

  8. No gum, candy, food or drinks are allowed in class.

  9. No cell phone use will be permitted during rehearsal time.

At the End of Class

  1. At the end of class, remain in your seat until dismissed.

  2. After putting away music and instruments, return to your seat with your belongings until the bell rings.  

  3. Leave seating the way you found it, or rearrange it according to directions from the teacher

  1. Verbal Warning.  

  2. Safe seat & Behavior Contract - with written solution to correct behavior. May or may not be signed by Parent, at the teacher's discretion. 

  3. Buddy Room

  4. Call home to the Parent.

  5. Referral to Principal.

School Owned Instrument Agreement

Kirbyville School is pleased to offer the use of a school owned instrument to your student.

Instrument:__________________________  Make/Model:_______________________  

In consideration of the Kirbyville School District releasing the above equipment to my student, I agree to take full responsibility for the care of the instrument described above, including loss or damage to the instrument beyond normal wear and tear for the current school year. I understand that I will be responsible to pay for any damage to the instrument. I also understand that if the instrument is not returned to school at the end of the school year stated above, I will be obligated to pay the school district for replacement cost of the instrument.
