Introduction
Third grade has been contacted
to settle a debate
among botanists and scientists.
They just can't relate!
Which is the best,
the roots or the stem?
Leaves, or perhaps flowers?
We have to help them!
We'll work together
to study plant parts.
We'll organize our knowledge
into useful charts.
We'll convince the scientists
to see our side.
Which part is the best?
We'll help them decide!!
with plants in mind.
With a partner, you will be researching the four main parts of a plant. Using the information you find through your research, you will help the scientists and botanists decide which plant part is the most important. You must be able to explain why you chose that part over all the others with specific reasons from your research.
Each one of you will be researching 2 parts of a plant. Together, choose which Researcher you will be.
Researcher #1: Roots and Leaves
Researcher #2: Stem and Flowers
You will need to research the two plant parts you have chosen using a variety of resources. This will ensure that your research is accurate and reliable. You may use textbooks, classroom books, library books, and the internet to get your information.
Be sure to print out data sheets for each plant part as you complete your research.

3. Discussion
Now that you have completed your research, you should regroup with your partner. Together, discuss the importance of each plant part using your data sheets. Remember that you have to choose one plant part as the most important.
Now it's time to make your final decision! What's it going to be?
4. Outline
Now it is time to start on your final project. First you will need to fill out the outline below.
5. Consultation
Once you have your sheet completely filled out, you need to decide what you are going to do for your final project.
Your final project must persuade your classmates and the scientists that the plant part you chose is the most important. Make sure that you include the following:
*the main functions of the plant part.
*an explanation of why the plant part you chose is more important than the other parts.
*pictures or diagrams of all plant parts.
*brochure, newspaper, booklet, or flyer
*poster
*Power Point
*another approved idea
6. Final Project
You may now begin working on your final project. You may use any materials that are available. Please refer to the rubric under the evaluation section of this WebQuest. It will help you make sure that you are on the right track!
Now, that you are all experts on the four main parts of a plant, you may want to investigate other facts about plants. Click on the links below for more information.
